On the occasion of Climate Week NYC, the largest annual climate event of its kind, Center for Constitutional Rights Senior Managing Attorney Shayana Kadidal will join the hybrid panel: An attack on one is an attack on all: how collectively responding to the threat of SLAPP suits is necessary for climate action.
Join us on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, 1-2:30 p.m. ET.
The panel will feature experts who are working day and night to defend climate activism against Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation, or SLAPPs. and increase the resiliency of civil society, both essential to securing a fast, fair, and funded global phase-out of fossil fuels.
Corporations and individuals use SLAPPs in an attempt to bury their critics in paperwork and intimidate would-be critics from speaking up. SLAPPs often lack any kind of merit and don’t need to result in a legal victory to achieve the outcome desired by corporate bullies. If SLAPPs are allowed to continue, fewer individuals and organizations would be willing and able to effectively participate in activities aimed at accelerating a global fast, fair, and funded phase-out of fossil fuels.
SLAPPs are a significant threat to the movement for climate action. Coalitions in the U.S., Europe, and beyond are collaborating to find solutions to the scourge of SLAPP suits. Anti-SLAPP solutions come in different forms, from solidarity efforts, such as pro bono legal support for victims of SLAPPs, to legislative efforts, including in the U.S. and E.U., to protect people and organizations.
