Join the Center for Constitutional Rights, Muslim Counterpublics Lab, No More Guantanamos, and Witness Against Torture for a virtual conversation with Guantánamo survivors at 4 p.m. ET on June 26, the UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.
In recent years, there have been growing demands to end indefinite detention and shutter the Guantánamo Bay prison. While the closure of the prison is a critical step, more will be needed to bring an end to this shameful chapter of torture and injustice. Indeed, Guantánamo and its legacy live on—in the lives of the more than 700 men who have been transferred out of the prison since it opened in 2002. While their situations may vary, it is clear that many men are struggling in different ways. The United States government has failed to take any meaningful steps to support these men or provide medical care and rehabilitation, leaving many Guantánamo survivors on their own to face a life of precarity, stigma, and despair.
On June 26, Guantánamo survivors will share their stories of life after detention, survival, and their quests for justice. We will also lift up the Guantánamo Survivors Fund and efforts to support men who have been released--and those who remain unjustly detained--so that their lives after Guantánamo are truly free.
