CCR is proud to join the New York Day of Remembrance Committee (NYC DOR) in a two-day program marking the 75th anniversary of President Roosevelt's signing of Executive Order 9066, which led to the forcible removal of Japanese Americans in the U.S. and throughout the Americas from their homes and into internment camps.
We will reflect on the incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II and draw on the legacy of Executive Order 9066 as we consider the current Executive Orders by the Trump administration that target and discriminate against Muslim and immigrant communities, and the growing movement against xenophobia and Islamophobia.
CCR Executive Director Vincent Warren will speak alongside a former internee, community leaders, lawyers, and artists. There will be a candle-lighting ceremony. The program will be followed by a community potluck to continue the conversation.
Speakers:
Theodora Yoshikami, camp survivor
Imam Khalid Latif, Muslim chaplain of the New York City Police Department and New York University
Hadi Eldebek, musician
Stan Mark, Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund
Sharmin Sadequee, No Separate Justice
Vincent Warren, Center for Constitutional Rights
This event is free and open to the public. Please arrive early as space is limited. Doors open at 12:15 pm. For more information, you can visit the NYC DOR Committee’s Facebook event page.
